Baselland has sub-regions with their own characteristics. They are important economic expansion areas for the Basel Area, where qualitative growth is made possible in line with spatial planning.

Economic room for expansion thanks to available space

Baselland is a growth region. The urban center of the Basel Area, which is directly adjacent to Baselland, is already operating at full capacity. Baselland has around 1,190 hectares of pure working land, of which just over 10 percent is undeveloped. This availability of space for expansion makes Baselland a particularly attractive location for companies looking for a site.

Characteristic sub-regions

Baselland is divided into regions with their own characteristics: the Laufental, the Leimental, the Birstal, the Rheintal and the Obere Baselbiet. The Birstal, Leimental and Rheintal sub-regions bordering the canton of Basel-Stadt are very Basel-oriented and enjoy the typical advantages of an agglomeration, such as good transport links, many jobs, a wide range of leisure, cultural and health facilities and a range of day-care centers. In contrast, the sub-regions Laufental and Obere Baselbiet have their very own small-town or even rural characteristics with their own strengths such as a low-cost environment, tranquillity and nature, independence and personal proximity.

In Baselland, over a thousand new apartments are built every year in rural and urban areas. The diverse range of properties on offer gives you the choice of living in a pretty Basel village, in one of the charming small towns or in the vibrant agglomeration of the city of Basel. To ensure that Baselland can continue to offer this quality of life in the future, economic expansion must be coordinated with sustainable spatial development.
