Canton of Basel-Landschaft with robust competitiveness

The Basel region ranks 7th in the UBS cantonal competitiveness indicator.

The canton of Basel-Landschaft ranks 7th in UBS’s Cantonal Competitiveness Indicator (KWI) 2025. Compared to the 2023 analysis, the canton lost one place and thus also the “high” rating for competitiveness. The KWI comprises over 50 indicators and provides information on the long-term relative competitiveness and growth potential of the cantons.

The canton of Basel-Landschaft has been awarded the rating “robust growth prospects” by UBS. According to UBS, the Basel region performs particularly well to very well in terms of accessibility (rank 4 out of 26 cantons), economic structure (rank 5), innovative strength (rank 7) and human capital (rank 9). There is potential for improvement in the labor market (rank 21) and cost environment (rank 20). The unfavorable demographic development and above-average increases in electricity prices in the canton have a negative impact here. The Basel region also has to make do with one of the lower ranks in public finances (rank 21).

The Government Council has set itself the goal of ensuring that the canton once again achieves a “high” rating for the competitiveness indicator. There is a particular need for action in the cost environment. In connection with the consequences of the US tariffs, the cantonal government has set up the “BL location” task force. This is working interdepartmentally and with the involvement of associations and companies to analyze the impact of US tariffs on the Basel-Landschaft economy and to improve the framework conditions.
