The tri-national agglomeration of Basel comprises 250 municipalities with almost 1 million people and the tri-national metropolitan area of Basel even has around 1.3 million people. The economic region extends functionally far into the neighboring areas of northwestern Switzerland, Alsace, southern Baden and as far as the Zurich economic region. Every day, around 71,000 commuters from neighboring France and Germany flock to northwestern Switzerland.
With Basel-Stadt at its heart
Together with the city of Basel, Baselland is the center of the economic region. The economic region has its center in the city of Basel and in the northern, seamlessly connected part of Baselland. The two Basel half-cantons not only give the region its name, but with a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of CHF 117,000 (cf. Switzerland: CHF 80,400) and more than 341,000 employees, they also set the economic pace in this vibrant economic region.

With Basel Area Business & Innovation, the three Northwestern Swiss cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt and Jura have a proactive institution for innovation promotion and location promotion. Basel Area Business & Innovation supports companies in establishing their business activities, networks companies with research and helps them to access the market. Its comprehensive information platform reports on innovations and events with a focus on knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship.
