BASELLAND- SURROUNDED BY VARIOUS CULTURAL CENTERS AND WORLD-CLASS LEISURE ACTIVITIES

The city of Basel is on Baselland’s doorstep and offers world-class museums, art and trade fairs. Together with the unique carnival and successful competitive sports in football, tennis, etc., the urban center of Basel radiates far beyond the economic region.

City of Basel as an urban center - with an impact on the entire economic region

The city of Basel is the urban center of the Basel region. With the University of Basel and the University Hospital with its cutting-edge medicine, it provides part of the education and healthcare for the entire economic region. At the same time, with its famous shopping street Freie Strasse, top gastronomy with around a dozen GaultMiIlau restaurants, the zoo, the Rhine with its swimming and recreational facilities and numerous other excursion destinations, it radiates throughout the region.

World-class museums, art and trade fairs

The city of Basel offers world-class museums, art and exhibitions: 40 museums on just 37 km2, from the internationally renowned Fondation Beyeler to the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museum Tinguely, the Kunsthalle and the Vitra Design Museum. The range is complemented by national and international trade fairs such as Art Basel, Swissbau and Fantasy Basel. Every year, Basel’s museums receive around 1.3 million visitors from all over the world, while the trade fairs attract a good 660,000 visitors.

Carnival and sport

Two special Basel highlights shine beyond the region. Firstly, the Basel Carnival, which was added to UNESCO’s cultural heritage list in 2017. For three days between mid-February and mid-March, around 18,000 enthusiastic carnival revellers parade through the streets with costumes and instruments. They are accompanied by more than 180 lanterns and the traditional supporting program, reflecting the critical and humorous spirit of the city’s population.

The second is sports entertainment with the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament.
