INVIGORATING COEXISTENCE OF RURAL-SERIOUS ATTITUDE, INTERNATIONALITY AND COSMOPOLITANISM

Baselland is characterized by an invigorating juxtaposition of rural-serious attitude, internationality and cosmopolitanism. This spirit has been shaped for centuries by its location at the border triangle.

Lively coexistence

Two worlds meet in Baselland: The rural, locally developed and the international, brought in by the nearby city and the border location. The two dimensions are the basis for many location qualities and form an invigorating coexistence. One example that illustrates this quality is the establishment of the watchmaking industry in the Waldenburg Valley. It shows the long tradition of combining the rural, local with influences from outside.

Rural-serious

A large part of Baselland is rural for historical reasons. A rural-serious attitude has developed in this area. This attitude is the basis of a work ethic that contributes greatly to the potential workforce: Highest respectability, particular job satisfaction and productivity and consequently low unemployment, moderate social costs, low administrative costs, political stability, cleanliness and tidiness.

Internationality and cosmopolitanism at the border triangle

A large proportion of the population speaks at least one foreign language in addition to German, usually English or French, which are taught at elementary school. Due to its location in the border triangle and its international connections, almost a fifth of the permanent resident population are from other European countries. Around 40,000 expats have settled in the Basel economic region. In addition, there are around 71,000 cross-border commuters from Germany and France. The region is not only globally oriented in its day-to-day work, but also in its events. Examples of this include the international art fair Art Basel and the Basel Tattoo, which has been adopted from Scotland.
