Thanks to the high concentration of major companies, the unique dynamism and innovative strength of private and university research and the high level of identification and commitment of the entire region, the Basel economic region is now a leading and profitable life sciences location worldwide. In terms of expenditure on research and development, the number of life sciences patents (170 per million inhabitants) and nominal hourly productivity (USD 550), the economic region ranks first worldwide in the life sciences sector.

Focus on pharma, biotech and medtech
The focus within the life sciences cluster is on pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical technology. Pharmaceuticals are also the driving force behind the Swiss export industry, whose pharmaceutical products amount to more than CHF 134 billion and account for around 10% of the global market share. In total, pharmaceutical companies in the Basel region invest around CHF 6 billion in research and development every year. This also includes investments in biotechnology and medical technology, which are becoming increasingly important with sales of around CHF 20 billion throughout Switzerland. The three focal points are complemented by the related sectors of agrochemicals and nanotechnology.
Research, development and production location in the growth sector of life sciences
Basic biological and medical research and industry come together in the Basel economic region. In recent years, a growing network of companies, institutions and specialized workers has developed around the traditional and leading companies Roche and Novartis. No fewer than 800 companies are active in this sector today. The Canton of Basel-Landschaft acts as a reliable sponsor of the research-intensive universities (FHNW, ETH and University of Basel) and promotes the development of the key life sciences industry through the Life Sciences Cluster Region Basel initiative, among other things.
