With more than 34,000 employees and high added value, the chemical industry is an important economic sector in Switzerland. Their settlement began in 1837 near Pratteln with the mining of salt. Even today, the areas on the banks of the Rhine are preferred locations for this. A special infrastructure has been created for chemistry. Examples of this are the Rhine ports with transshipment points for hazardous goods, dedicated industrial areas and the port railroad tracks.
